This North-South research collaboration links the groundbreaking sustainability work at the University of Sussex Business School, England to the in-depth studies of place and culture at the Anthropology Lab at Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia. We also support and are supported by the work of community groups that are embedded in place, such as the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, the Bakudapan Food Study Group, and Nusa Wise Knowledge Exchange.

Principal Investigators

Dr. Shova Thapa Karki

Senior Lecturer, University of Sussex

Shova is Senior Lecturer at the Business School with a background in social science and ecology. Originally from Nepal and now residing in South Coast UK, she researches sustainability transitions, production and consumption in food systems, circular economy, sustainable entrepreneurship and innovations, livelihoods, resource conflicts, land use and biodiversity conservation.

Dr. Bradley Parrish 

Honorary Professor, University of Sussex

Bradley is Honorary Professor at the Business School with a background in environmental social science. Originally from the US and having worked in the UK, he now resides in Indonesia where he engages in research and practices related to sustainability transitions, production and consumption in food systems, food and nutrition security, sustainable entrepreneurship and innovation, knowledge mobilization, community mobilization, and resource conflict mediation. He is co-founder and chairman of an Indonesian enterprise dedicated to positive impact design that has been operating for 15 years, and founded the non-profit Nusa Wise Knowledge Exchange.

Dr. Zamzam Fauzanafi

Director of the Anthropology Laboratory (LAURA), Gadjah Mada University

Zamzam is Lecturer and Head of the Anthropology Laboratory for Action Research (LAURA) in the Faculty of Cultural Studies with a background in visual, sensorial, and digital anthropology. Originally from Indonesia, he studied in the UK and the Netherlands, and now resides in Central Java. His research focuses on food sustainability and climate change, community empowerment, uses of digital media, participatory education, disaster risk reduction, and violence in indigenous communities. For almost 20 years he developed a participatory visual program for youth empowerment around Indonesia in an NGO he founded with funding from the Ford Foundation.
